The full-scale war in Ukraine has become a catalyst for a global reassessment of air defense strategies. Combat experience has shown Western armies that traditional, expensive defense systems are not always effective against the mass use of unmanned aerial vehicles. In this new reality, the focus is shifting not only to high-tech complexes but also to simple, accessible solutions for threat detection.
Weaknesses of Modern Air Defense Systems
As reported by RBK-Ukraine citing Business Insider, modern Western armies are equipped with advanced sensors capable of tracking missiles and combat aircraft. However, the drone war has revealed critical gaps in the capabilities of existing air defense. The mass use of drones has turned them into a constant threat both on the front lines and in the deep rear, forcing military personnel to seek new ways to detect and neutralize such targets.The situation requires the implementation of new technological solutions that would allow for the timely detection of low-observable targets invisible to classic radars.
NATO Statement: A Return to Basic Technologies
Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe, Sir John Stringer, directly pointed out the need to change funding priorities. According to him, Western countries need to increase investments in specialized detection systems."For air defense purposes, we need to return to investing in the sensors we need," emphasized the alliance representative. Stringer noted that some of these solutions are new for many Western states, citing the experience implemented in Ukraine as an example.
Acoustic Sensors as a Weapon Against Drones
One of the key areas currently receiving development is inexpensive acoustic sensors. These devices work based on microphones and help detect drones by the sound of their engines. This solution, tested under real combat conditions on Ukrainian soil, demonstrates high efficiency at a low cost compared to classic radars.It is precisely the war in Ukraine that has become one of the main factors in rethinking modern air defense architecture. Drones have become one of the key tools of modern warfare, stimulating the development of the counter-drone industry.
Countermeasure: New Interception Means
In response to these challenges, Ukrainian companies are actively developing new means of combating enemy UAVs. A bright example is the activity of the company Yartura, which presented a line of interceptor drones called Dancer. The new version of the Dancer 4.5.0 model has received a number of significant improvements:- Increased flight speed;
- Automatic target tracking system;
- Declared protection against electronic warfare means.
The development of such technologies allows for the creation of a multi-level defense system, combining both simple detection methods and complex interception means.
