Ukrainian canoeist Lyudmyla Luzan won the first gold medal for the Ukrainian team at the 2026 World Canoe Sprint Championships. This is reported by Sport RBC.UA, citing the press service of the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine. Luzan triumphed in the C-1 (canoe single) over the Olympic 200-meter distance, confirming her status as the reigning world and European champion.
Victory on the Olympic Distance
Competing as the reigning world and European champion, Luzan took the lead from the very first meters of the course and held it all the way to the finish. The winner's final time was 44.40 seconds. The Ukrainian beat Canadian Sofia Jensen by 0.50 seconds, while the bronze medalist, American Nevin Harrison, trailed by 0.54 seconds. Thus, the entire podium was claimed by athletes from three different countries, and Ukraine topped the medal table in this discipline.
A Historic Achievement
This victory was not just another award but a historic achievement. Lyudmyla Luzan became only the second athlete in history and the first from Europe to successfully defend her world championship title over the C-1 200-meter distance. Before her, only the legendary Canadian Laurence Vincent-Lapierre had won this discipline twice in a row. For European canoeing, this is a breakthrough: for the first time, a representative of the continent has managed to defend the world title on this Olympic distance.

For Luzan herself, this World Championship holds special significance: it is already the 10th, a jubilee world championship in her career. As a result of her performances at the world championship level, she has earned her 13th medal — 9 gold, 3 silver, and 1 bronze. The gold in the C-1 over 200 m was not Luzan's only award at these competitions.
