The Portuguese city of Montemor-o-Velho hosted one of the most significant events in the paddlers' calendar — the 2026 European Canoe Sprint Championships. The main hero of the tournament was Ukrainian athlete Lyudmyla Luzan, who demonstrated absolute superiority over her rivals.

This tournament went down in the history of the canoeist's career as her most successful. Luzan won four gold medals out of five possible events in which she participated. Such a result not only confirmed her status as one of the strongest athletes in the world but also allowed her to set new records.

Historic Achievement on the Short Distance

The Ukrainian won her first gold of the tournament in the K-1 200-meter race. The victory was convincing: Luzan finished with a time of 43.710 seconds. This time was not just a winning one but also a record for European Championships, highlighting the athlete's level of physical preparation and technique.

Immediately following this success came a victory in the team category. In the K-2 200-meter discipline, Lyudmyla competed in tandem with her constant partner Anastasiya Rybachok. The duo posted a time of 43.399 seconds, leaving competitors far behind.

Defending the Title and Setting a New Record

The 500-meter distance is traditionally considered the most difficult test, requiring not only explosive power but also endurance. In the K-1 race, Luzan successfully defended her European Championship title. She covered the distance in 2 minutes 00.822 seconds.

This result became the best time in the history of European Championship finals for this distance. The established record demonstrates that the Ukrainian athlete is at the peak of her form and capable of dominating both sprint and longer distances.

"Golden Poker" and Olympic Prospects

Lyudmyla Luzan decided to complete her winning streak in the K-2 500-meter discipline. This is an Olympic distance where competition is traditionally high. Together with Anastasiya Rybachok, she completed a "golden poker," winning the fourth race in a row.

The results of the 2026 European Championship in Montemor-o-Velho sent a powerful signal to the world paddling community. The ability to win in singles and doubles, on short and long distances, makes the Luzan and Rybachok duo, as well as Lyudmyla herself in individual events, the favorites for upcoming international starts.
