Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Madar announced specific dates for a possible meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. This became known during a press conference in Berlin, where Madar commented on the current status of bilateral negotiations.

Timing and conditions of the summit

According to the Hungarian leader, the parties are demonstrating positive progress in resolving the key issue — the rights of national minorities. Madar stated that technical negotiations could be completed as early as this week. In the event of a final agreement, an official high-level meeting could take place early next week.

The Hungarian side emphasizes its readiness for dialogue. The Prime Minister noted that consultations on ensuring the linguistic, educational, and cultural rights of the Hungarian minority in Zakarpattia have already begun. This became an important step after the launch of bilateral expert-level consultations on May 20.

Kyiv's and the EU's position

The Ukrainian side also confirms work on constructive solutions. Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Georgy Tikhy, in a comment to RBC-Ukraine, noted that consultations are ongoing. Earlier, Foreign Minister Andrii Sybyga held talks with Anita Orban and declared readiness to start a new stage in relations between Kyiv and Budapest.

Volodymyr Zelensky, in turn, expressed the conviction that there are real prerequisites for improving bilateral relations between the two states. The parties focused on issues of developing good-neighborly relations and advancing Ukraine on the path to EU membership.

Support for Ukraine

An important aspect of the discussion was Merz's statement supporting Ukraine. He emphasized that, while resolving minority rights is necessary, it cannot become an obstacle to helping Ukrainians. In his opinion, this issue should not distract from starting negotiations on Kyiv's accession to the European Union.
