The Ukrainian Chess Federation (FCU) has announced a major overhaul of its management structure and presented the first member of the updated team. He is Danish Grandmaster and Magnus Carlsen's long-time coach, Peter Heine Nielsen, Sport RBC.UA reports, citing the Federation's official Facebook page; the appointment is also confirmed by Tribuna.com. In his new role, Nielsen will take up the post of Deputy Executive Director and head the international cooperation division.

According to the FCU's announcement, the Danish specialist's area of responsibility will include advocacy and strategic engagement with the International Chess Federation (FIDE) and the European Chess Union (ECU), attracting foreign resources, implementing joint projects, and seeking new partners. In addition, Nielsen will provide support and coordination for the Ukrainian national teams' performances on the international stage. Thus, both the federation's external diplomacy and the operational support of the national teams are entrusted to a single person.

Nielsen's career: from Grandmaster to champion's coach

Peter Heine Nielsen became a Grandmaster in 1994. At the club and national level, he won the Danish Chess Championship five times and represented his country at seven Chess Olympiads, including a bronze medal on the third board at the Moscow Olympiad. As a coach, Nielsen worked with Viswanathan Anand from 2002 to 2012, during which time the Indian chess player became World Champion and defended the title three times. Since 2013, the Danish specialist has been coaching Magnus Carlsen, who, according to the source, remains the strongest player in classical chess, rapid, and blitz at the time of publication.
