The courts of the French Open witnessed the conclusion of one of the most intriguing matches of the fourth round of the women's singles. Ukrainian tennis player Marta Kostyuk achieved a resounding victory over the world's third-ranked player, Iga Swiatek, ending her opponent's losing streak in head-to-head meetings and advancing to the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam tournament.
Battle of Records and Statistics
The meeting between the two tennis players was anticipated with special tension. Marta Kostyuk, ranked 15th in the world and the second-ranked player in Ukraine, stepped onto the court at the peak of her form. By the time the match started, she had won 15 consecutive matches on clay, having previously won prestigious tournaments in Rouen and Madrid.
Her opponent, Iga Swiatek, despite lacking titles in the current season, remained the main favorite of the competition. For the Pole, Roland Garros is home: she has conquered this major four times and, until today, had not lost a single set on the Paris courts in the three previous matches of the current draw.
The head-to-head statistics prior to this match were entirely in Swiatek's favor — the score was 4:0. The Pole had won all her victories in two sets. Notably, five years ago, the opponents had already met at this stage of Roland Garros, where Iga emerged stronger with a score of 6:3, 6:4.
Match Progress: From Even Struggle to Triumph
The first set turned out to be incredibly competitive. The opponents methodically held their serves, and only after the score reached 3:3 did the exchange of breaks begin. The decisive moment came at 6:5: the Ukrainian took the decisive point on her opponent's serve and won the set 7:5. This was a historic moment — the first set Kostyuk had ever taken from Swiatek in their entire rivalry.
In the second set, the balance of power changed radically. After the initial exchange of games, Marta Kostyuk took five points in a row, literally demolishing her star opponent with a score of 6:1. The final match score was 7:5, 6:1.
Historic Achievement for Ukrainian Tennis
This victory marked Marta Kostyuk's 16th consecutive win on clay. Furthermore, for the sixth time in her career, she managed to defeat a player from the top five of the rankings, and for the third time this year.
Marta entered the history of Ukrainian tennis, becoming the second player to reach the quarterfinals at Roland Garros. The first to do so was Elina Svitolina, who played at this stage five times (in 2015, 2017, 2020, 2023, and 2025). For Kostyuk herself, this is her second quarterfinal at a Grand Slam tournament; her first was at the 2024 Australian Open.
Who's Next?
Marta will learn her quarterfinal opponent based on the outcome of the match between Elina Svitolina and the Swiss player Belinda Bencic. This match is also scheduled for May 31, starting no earlier than 14:05 Kyiv time.
