The State Emergency Service of Ukraine (SES) has provided details on the aftermath of the massive attack on the capital. A large-scale rescue operation is underway in several districts of Kyiv: firefighters and rescuers are evacuating dozens of people from burning and destroyed buildings, as well as from under the rubble.
Critical situation in residential areas
One of the most difficult sites was a hit on a five-story residential building. The impact caused structural damage from the 9th to the 5th floor. Rescuers managed to bring 17 people to fresh air who were in the impact zone. Another 28 residents were evacuated from the upper floors using a ladder truck. The rescue operation in this building is currently ongoing.
Fires in high-rises and garages
Significant damage has also been recorded in multi-story complexes. In one residential complex, debris fell onto the 4th floor of one of the 25-story buildings. A fire broke out in the adjacent building, covering apartments over an area of 150 square meters. The fire also spread to a nearby garage cooperative.
At another location, a strike hit a 30-story building. As a result of the debris impact, a large-scale fire erupted, engulfing floors 23 through 25. Emergency services continue to work at all locations, containing the fires and ensuring safety.
Number of casualties being clarified
According to the latest data from Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko, 24 people were injured in the capital as a result of the attack. Of these, 14 were hospitalized, including two children. Information on the exact number of victims and injured is still being clarified.
The situation is also complicated in the Kyiv region: one death and ten injuries among residents of the region have been reported.
Objectives of the attack
Earlier, the Center for Countering Disinformation (CCD) commented on the nature of the attack. Experts believe that the massive attack on Kyiv serves demonstrative purposes. According to analysts, Russia is trying to create a certain "picture" for its own society by demonstrating the scale of strikes on the Ukrainian capital.
