On the night of June 14, Ukraine faced a large-scale aerial threat. Air defense forces repelled a massive attack involving 98 strike unmanned aerial vehicles. The operation to repel the invasion was conducted across the entire territory of the country, from the northern to the southern and eastern borders.
Nature of the Attack and Weapons Used
According to the Ukrainian Air Force, the Russian side employed a wide range of unmanned systems. The attack was carried out by Shahed-type kamikaze drones, including jet modifications, as well as "Gerbera" and "Italmas" drones. To disrupt the work of air defense systems, the enemy used "Parody" type decoy drones.
The directions of the attack were chosen strategically: strikes were launched from Russian territory (Orel, Bryansk, Primorsko-Akhtarsk directions) and from occupied territories (Chauda, Guardyanske in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea).
Effectiveness of Air Defense
The country's defense was carried out by aviation, anti-aircraft missile troops, electronic warfare units, unmanned systems, and mobile fire groups of the Defense Forces. By 08:00 in the morning, 91 enemy drones were shot down or suppressed. This indicates the high efficiency of Ukrainian crews under conditions of a massive attack.
However, not all targets were intercepted. Seven strike drones hit six different locations. Additionally, debris from shot-down drones was recorded falling on four territories, creating risks of fires and damage to infrastructure.
Situation in the Mykolaiv Region
Particular attention was drawn to the events near Mykolaiv. In the early hours of June 14, the city was shelled, resulting in damage to two types of infrastructure. The Ukrainian Air Force warned that the attack continues in certain areas and urged citizens to follow safety rules.
Context of Escalation
The attack on the night of June 14 was a continuation of a series of strikes. On the previous night, June 13, Russia launched 118 drones at Ukraine. Then, air defense also shot down most targets, but 3 hits and debris falling on 6 locations were recorded. The frequency and intensity of such attacks indicate a systematic attempt by the enemy to disrupt the functioning of critical infrastructure and exhaust the resources of Ukrainian defense.
