In the night of June 28, 2026, an event occurred in the Krasnodar Krai that attracted the attention of international observers and space monitoring systems. A large fire broke out at the Slavyansk Oil Refinery (Slavyansk NPP), located in the city of Slavyansk-na-Kubani. Thermal sensor data and high-resolution satellite imagery record the scale of the fire, which affected key nodes of the fuel and energy complex.

Monitoring Data and Geography of the Fire

According to verified data from the international NASA FIRMS thermal anomaly registration system, powerful fire foci were recorded on the territory of the enterprise owned by OOO "Slavyansk-ECO". An express analysis of satellite images allows localizing the main burning zones in sectors critical for the plant's operation:

  • The tank farm intended for storing crude oil;
  • Warehouses for finished products and basic oil fractions;
  • The primary oil refining unit.

According to information received from the municipality's duty-dispatch service and confirmed by OSINT sources, the total area of the fire exceeded 20,000 square meters. The NASA FIRMS system also identified a secondary thermal trace on the adjacent territory, where the oil stabilization and gas preparation unit, managed by OOO "RN-Krasnodarneftegaz", is located.

Positions of the Parties and Official Statements

Two official versions have emerged regarding the causes of the incident, reflecting the positions of the involved parties. The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine officially confirmed the conduct of a coordinated operation by the Defense Forces aimed at striking logistics objects. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in his statements, emphasized the scale of the strike, noting that simultaneously with the Slavyansk Refinery, the Yaroslavl Oil Refinery "Slavneft-YANOS", located 700 km from the border, was also subjected to impact.

For their part, Russian authorities give a different interpretation of the events. The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation reported in an official briefing about the interception and destruction of aerial targets over the region. The Governor of Krasnodar Krai, Veniamin Kondratyev, informed that the fire at the plant was a consequence of the fall of debris from intercepted unmanned aerial vehicles. According to Russian emergency services, as a result of the incident, local damage to private homes and gas distribution networks was recorded in the residential sector of the city, as well as one fatality.

Economic Significance and Consequences

The Slavyansk Refinery is a strategically important object of the Southern Federal District. The enterprise has a design processing capacity of about 3–4 million tons of raw materials per year and specializes in the production of fuel oil, naphtha, and marine fuel. The failure of key units and the tank farm can significantly affect the region's logistics chains.

Environmental damage is also assessed as significant. As a result of the burning, a dense smoke trail was formed, which spread within a radius of 15 to 45 kilometers, affecting adjacent districts of the Krasnodar Krai. According to international legal norms and rules of warfare, energy and fuel infrastructure objects involved in meeting the logistical needs of the armed forces are classified as potential military-industrial targets, which explains the interest in them from the opposing sides.
