On the morning of August 7, 2026, in Kharkiv, near the KhTZ plant, a major traffic accident involving a city bus and two passenger cars occurred. Preliminary data suggests that the cause of the accident was a gross violation of traffic rules by a passenger car driver, leading to a chain reaction of collisions and the hospitalization of more than ten people.
Timeline and Circumstances of the Accident
According to the press service of the Kharkiv Regional Police, the incident unfolded at the intersection of Aleshin Avenue. A 28-year-old driver of a Toyota vehicle entered the intersection against a red traffic light. At that moment, a Karsan city bus, driven by a 73-year-old driver, was moving with a green light. The passenger car crashed directly into the entrance door of the bus, which was open for passengers to board at the time of impact.
The force of the impact was so significant that the bus was pushed onto the opposing lane. There, it collided with a Ford vehicle driven by a 53-year-old man. Thus, three vehicles were involved in the accident. A serious traffic jam formed at the scene, and rescue services worked in an enhanced mode.
Injured and Medical Assistance
Director of the Emergency Medical Care Center, Viktor Zabashtha, confirmed that after the accident, medical assistance was required for 11 people. The age of the injured ranges from 24 to 73 years. Among the injured are both bus passengers and drivers of passenger cars.
Nine people were taken to city hospitals. Four injured persons were released home for outpatient treatment after examination, while five others remain in the hospital with moderate injuries. In particular, one woman suffered a fracture. Additionally, three injured persons, including the bus driver, were hospitalized with an acute stress reaction (psychological trauma).
Investigative Actions and Liability
Law enforcement agencies have already begun work to establish all the circumstances of the incident. The data on the accident is planned to be entered into the Unified Register of Pre-trial Investigations under Part 1 of Article 286 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — violation of road safety rules or vehicle operation by persons responsible for their compliance.
The main focus of investigators is on the actions of the Toyota driver, who, according to preliminary data, ignored the red traffic light. This violation became the key factor that provoked the accident with mass casualties.
Context: Stricter Liability for Traffic Violations
This incident occurred against the backdrop of active public discussion on the need to tighten liability for traffic violations in Ukraine. Earlier, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy instructed the Cabinet of Ministers and the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) to work out appropriate measures.
The initiative received public support: on the website of the Office of the President of Ukraine on June 26, 2026, an electronic petition appeared: "Stop systematic traffic violators: road mortality must become an NSDC issue." The author of the petition is Alexey Glushich, the father of a 12-year-old boy who died in a traffic accident in Kyiv on June 5. The document collected more than 26,000 signatures, exceeding the required threshold of 25,000 for mandatory consideration.
