May 2026 entered the history of the conflict in Ukraine as one of the most tragic. According to the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission, it was during this month that the highest number of civilian casualties was recorded in the last four years. The total number of victims exceeded 2,000, a unprecedented figure since April 2022.

Statistics of Human Losses

In the monthly report, published citing RBC-Ukraine, shocking figures are presented. In May, the death of at least 274 civilians was confirmed. Another 1,763 people were injured with varying degrees of severity. Danielle Bell, head of the UN mission, emphasized the scale of the tragedy: "The total number of civilian casualties in May exceeded 2,000, and this month became the deadliest since April 2022".

Causes of Escalation: Powerful Weapons in Cities

UN experts point to the main cause of the sharp rise in mortality — the use of powerful weapons by Russia in densely populated urban areas. The use of missiles and air bombs led to dozens of people being killed or injured in a single strike. Such tactics cause colossal damage to infrastructure and the lives of civilians.

Threat from the Sky: Record for Attack Drones

Small attack drones pose a particular danger near the front line. The statistics of May losses from this type of weapon became the highest since the start of the full-scale invasion. At least 64 civilians were killed by drones, and 539 were injured. The most affected region was Kherson: 14 deaths and 221 injuries were recorded there.

Threats and New Attacks

The situation on the front remains tense against the backdrop of the rhetoric of the Russian leadership. Vladimir Putin previously threatened to intensify attacks on Ukraine's infrastructure, justifying this as a response to shelling of Russian cities. Words are backed by actions: on June 12, Russia attacked thermal power plants of the company DTEK, resulting in the death of one employee and another being injured. Meanwhile, the media circulated photos of new launchers for "Shahed" drones, which Russia has deployed on the territory adjacent to the border with Belarus.
