The Ukrainian national football team, unable to host official matches on home soil due to wartime restrictions, has met fans in person for the first time since the full-scale invasion began. The open training session in Lviv was more than just a sporting event — it became an emotional moment that united the team and the people.
Over 5,000 Fans at Skif Stadium
The historic meeting took place at Lviv’s Skif Stadium. More than 5,000 spectators filled the stands — fans who had supported the team remotely for years now had the chance to see the players up close. First, they watched training drills led by head coach Andrea Maldera, followed by direct interaction between the team and the public.
“We Take Our Example From You” — Coach’s Words
Andrea Maldera, addressing the stands, did not hide his emotions:
“This is a very strong emotion. We take our example from you. If we take even 10% of the emotions you give us — we will win absolutely every match. Thank you all!”
His words became a symbol of mutual support between players and fans, separated by war.
Interactive Zones on the Field and Gratitude to the People
To make up for years of separation, organizers prepared a rich entertainment program. Interactive zones were set up on the football field: fans could chat with players, take photos together, get autographs, and feel like part of the team.
The Ukrainian Football Association (UFA) emphasized that this evening was, first and foremost, a sign of gratitude to every citizen of Ukraine who continues to support the national team despite the circumstances.
“The national team cannot yet host a major match on its home stadium, but this evening we gave each other the most important thing — the feeling that we are together. Our energy, openness, and confidence. We still have many victories ahead. And we will definitely celebrate them at home,” — stated the UFA.
Recent Results and Upcoming Matches
Recall that in the debut match under Andrea Maldera, the Ukrainian national team convincingly defeated Poland 2-0 in Wrocław. The next friendly match will be against Denmark on Sunday, June 7, in Odense. The match will start at 19:30 Kyiv time.
Also, it was previously reported that one of the national team players signed a contract with the current European champion — another signal that Ukrainian football retains its appeal and level even in wartime conditions.
The open training session in Lviv was not just a sporting event — it became a symbol of unity, hope, and faith in the future. And although official matches are still held abroad, the spirit of the Ukrainian national team remains at home — together with those who love and support it.
