The world of high fashion is preparing for an event that promises to be not just a retrospective, but a profound exploration of human nature and responsibility. The Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art has announced that the spring 2027 exhibition and the famous Met Gala charity ball will be dedicated to the British designer John Galliano.
The exhibition, titled John Galliano: Horizons, will be a unique project: it will not only celebrate the designer's genius but also honestly tell the story of the dark period that nearly ended his career.
Horizons of Creativity: From Central Saint Martins to Maison Margiela
The exhibition, which will run from May 9, 2027, to January 9, 2028, will cover four decades of the designer's work. Visitors will see a massive collection including clothing, accessories, sketches, maquettes, and archival materials. The core of the exhibition is the world's largest collection of Galliano's works, housed in the Costume Institute.
The tour of the exhibition will begin with the origins: the 1984 graduation collection created at the legendary Central Saint Martins school. Then, viewers will move through the stages of his work at Givenchy and Christian Dior, as well as see his later, equally bold works for Maison Margiela, including the Spring-Summer 2024 collection.
Scandal as Part of History
The organizers do not plan to bypass the difficult pages of the author's biography. The exhibition curator is Andrew Bolton, head of the Costume Institute, who has previously researched Galliano's work. The exhibition is divided into three thematic parts: "Orientations," "Horizons," and "Atlas of Transformation."
The first part, "Orientations," will examine the resonant period of 2010–2011. It was then that Galliano was fired from his post as creative director of Dior and lost control of his own brand due to antisemitic, racist, and anti-Asian remarks. In a Paris court, he was found guilty of public insults based on race, religion, and ethnic origin.
However, the exhibition will not be limited to the facts of the accusation. The organizers intend to show the path the designer took after this: the period of treatment for drug addiction and his public admission of guilt. Instead of a classic story of shame and redemption, the curators will analyze how memories, experience, and historical circumstances change the perception of the master's work.
A Historic Event in the Fashion World
The choice of theme for the Met Gala 2027 has a special historical context. John Galliano will be only the third living designer to whom the Metropolitan Museum has dedicated a personal exhibition. Previously, Yves Saint Laurent in 1983 and Rei Kawakubo (founder of Comme des Garçons) in 2017 were honored in this way.
Traditionally, the exhibition sets the tone for the annual Met Gala ball. Guests at the 2027 event will be able to create looks inspired by Galliano's work and the ideas of the exhibition, turning the red carpet into a continuation of the artistic narrative.
