For many driving test candidates, failing an exam is not just an annoying setback but also a reason to attempt a retake as soon as possible. However, Ukrainian legislation sets strict boundaries: you cannot sign up for a retake immediately. The main MIA service center has clarified the rules regarding the mandatory waiting period and explained how to correctly calculate this timeframe.

Why is there a 10-day waiting period?

According to current regulations, if the theoretical or practical exam is failed, the next attempt can be scheduled no earlier than 10 calendar days later. This means that tests can only be retaken on the 11th day after the failure.

The MIA emphasizes that this period is not introduced to make life more difficult for future drivers, but for a specific purpose. Ten days is the time allocated for quality preparation. During this period, the candidate can:

  • Review the Rules of the Road (ROR);
  • Carefully analyze the mistakes made;
  • Undergo additional practical training with an instructor.

This approach is designed to help drivers better absorb the material and, consequently, increase overall road safety.

How to correctly calculate the waiting period?

It is important to understand the mechanics of counting days so as not to miss the opportunity to sign up for the exam on time. The day on which the candidate took the exam is not counted in this period. The count begins the following day.

A visual example: if the exam took place on July 1, the 10-day count begins on July 2. The tenth day falls on July 11, meaning you can sign up for a retake on July 12.

These rules apply equally to both the theoretical part and practical driving.

How to sign up for a retake?

After the mandatory waiting period expires, registration for a retake is handled through the MIA service center. It is important to consider the features of the booking system:

  • Online registration opens 21 days in advance;
  • The system will automatically not allow booking a date earlier than provided by legislation (i.e., earlier than the 11th day).

The procedure for conducting exams is regulated by the Instruction approved by MIA Order No. 515. The document clearly states that the next attempt can be scheduled no earlier than 10 calendar days, and the count begins the day following the exam.

Important for those who have had their license revoked

A separate attention is deserved for drivers who already had licenses but were deprived of them for driving under the influence or due to causing a traffic accident. For them, license restoration is possible only after the expiration of the punishment term.

To return the license, you must apply to any MIA service center, submit a package of documents, and retake both the theoretical and practical exams. In this case, standard rules for conducting examination procedures apply.
