The crash of a MiG-29 fighter jet, which occurred in August 2026 in the Berezivka district of the Odesa region, remains under close scrutiny by the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) of Ukraine. According to official data released following the completion of an internal investigation conducted by the Air Force Command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, one of the primary theories regarding the aviation incident is the abnormal activation of a guided missile that was on board the aircraft.

Incident details and investigation progress

It should be recalled that on August 10, 2026, the fighter jet was performing a combat mission to intercept enemy unmanned aerial vehicles. During the mission, the aircraft suddenly caught fire in mid-air, leading to the pilot losing control and the subsequent crash of the jet. To establish all the circumstances of the event, the SBI has initiated a criminal proceeding regarding violations of flight rules or flight preparation rules, as well as operational rules for aircraft, resulting in a disaster.

Conflicting data

It is important to note that at this time, the theory regarding technical missile failure is only one of many under consideration and has not been conclusively proven. SBI representatives emphasize that the results of the Air Force's internal investigation are not legally final. In accordance with legal requirements, this hypothesis must be confirmed within the framework of criminal proceedings through a series of forensic technical examinations.

Expert assessment and the 'black box'

Currently, experts are conducting a comprehensive analysis of all available data, the key element of which is the decoding of the flight data recorder, the so-called 'black box'. Investigators note that only after the completion of all necessary examinations, including analysis of debris, flight recording data, and a check of the technical condition of all fighter jet components, can an objective conclusion be drawn about the causes of the tragedy.

The public and military experts await the completion of the pre-trial investigation, which is expected to clarify the chain of events on that day. The commission's work is complicated by the need to find answers to whether the missile activation was the result of external impact, material fatigue, or a design defect.
