In the history of the British highway police, there is a recorded unprecedented case that can only be called a miracle with a huge stretch. A 49-year-old man, officially recognized as practically blind, carried out a night raid 250 kilometers long in a stolen car. His navigation system was primitive and deadly: he drove blindly, orienting himself solely by the red clearance lights of the trucks ahead.
Tactics of the blind driver
The incident occurred at night on the motorways of the United Kingdom. The man, having no driver's license and suffering from a severe form of visual impairment, secretly took the keys to a car belonging to an acquaintance. Instead of staying home, he went out onto the highway, where he began a two-hour marathon.
As revealed during the investigation, the "secret" of his survival lay in the tactic of following large vehicles. The driver pulled up behind trucks and kept the car in the lane, looking only at their rear lights. If a truck went off at an interchange, the man slowed down and waited for the next source of light to appear to continue his journey behind a new "navigator".
Chase and arrest
The extraordinary ride ended only when the strange driving style attracted the attention of a patrol. Sudden braking and unnatural hugging of the curb made the police stop the violator. Upon arrest, it turned out that the driver was physically unable to focus his gaze on documents or the faces of the officers.
The state prosecutor at the hearings called what happened an "absolute miracle", since driving blindly at high speed did not lead to a mass catastrophe. However, the court emphasized that the defendant intentionally exposed hundreds of other road users to mortal danger.
Court verdict
The man was found guilty on several serious charges: vehicle theft, driving without a license, and creating a dangerous situation on the road. The defense tried to appeal to the defendant's state of health, but the arguments did not work.
