Catastrophic Blow to Fuel Infrastructure
The Moscow Oil Refinery (NPP) has been completely disabled as a result of a drone attack. According to industry sources, the facility will not be able to resume operations until at least 2027. The scale of the damage is so extensive that even minimal repairs will take at least six months, but the complete production shutdown is expected to last significantly longer.
The incident occurred in the early hours of June 18, when drones struck Moscow. One of the primary targets was the capital's refinery in the Kapotnya district. Subsequently, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy officially confirmed that the Ukrainian Defense Forces had struck the facility. He emphasized that such strikes are intended to demonstrate to Russia the necessity of ending the war.
Consequences for Russia's Energy Security
The shutdown of the largest capital refinery complicates the efforts of Russian authorities to combat fuel shortages. Two industry sources reported that the enterprise has ceased oil refining due to significant damage to four large storage tanks and technological equipment. This creates serious risks for fuel supply not only in Moscow but also in the surrounding regions.
Russia's Countermeasures
To enhance the plant's protection against potential new attacks, Russian military forces have deployed several Pantsir air defense missile and gun systems around the Moscow Refinery. These measures are aimed at preventing repeat strikes and protecting critical infrastructure.
At the same time, Gazprom Neft, the company owning the Moscow Refinery, has not responded to requests for comment. Reuters notes the absence of an official reaction from the company's management, leaving many questions unanswered.
