Ukrainian Chelsea footballer Mykhailo Mudryk has received official permission to immediately return to professional sport. The long-standing anti-doping case, which could have ended the player's career, has been resolved by agreement between the Football Association (FA), the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), and the athlete himself.
End of four-year ban
Mudryk himself was the first to announce the happy news on his Instagram. The footballer, who has not played since November 2024, wrote that the four-year ban previously imposed on him has been lifted. Under the terms of the agreement, the suspension period was equated to the time already served, allowing the player to resume his career without delay.
"After a long struggle, the four-year ban imposed on me has been lifted, and I am free to immediately resume my career," Sport RBC.UA quotes the athlete.
Mudryk emphasized that this period was the most difficult in his professional life. He reiterated his position: from the beginning of the case, he insisted that he never knowingly or intentionally took prohibited substances. "My commitment to fair competition and the professional and virtuous representation of the club and country has always been important to me," the Ukrainian noted.
How events unfolded
Problems for the 25-year-old winger began at the end of 2024 following a positive doping test. Meldonium, a substance on WADA's prohibited list, was found in the athlete's sample. In January 2026, the FA's independent regulatory commission imposed a four-year ban on Mudryk.
The footballer appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), which accepted the case on February 25. At that time, the parties were exchanging written explanations, and a hearing date had not yet been set. However, the situation changed thanks to an adjustment of WADA rules.
Changes were made to the regulations regarding the permissible level of meldonium. According to the new parameters, the concentration of the substance in Mudryk's sample, if the test were taken today, would not result in a violation being recorded. Although these changes do not have retroactive effect, they became a key factor in negotiations.
As a result, the FA and Mudryk agreed to settle the case with WADA's approval. The Ukrainian admitted to violating anti-doping rules and agreed to a suspension equal to the time already served. As of today, legal restrictions have been lifted.
Return to Chelsea and plans for the season
The London club officially confirmed the conclusion of the case and welcomed the opportunity for the player's return. Chelsea stated that they had supported Mudryk throughout the process and would now focus on restoring his physical fitness.
During the period of inactivity, since November 2024, the footballer maintained his fitness independently, training at the base of the English club "Uxbridge." Now he can return to full training with the team. According to British media, Mudryk is expected to join Chelsea during the pre-season tour under the new head coach Xabi Alonso.
Mudryk transferred to the London club from Donetsk's Shakhtar in January 2023. The transfer fee was 70 million euros guaranteed, and with bonuses, it could reach around 100 million. During this time, the Ukrainian played 73 matches for Chelsea and scored 10 goals.
The main task facing Mudryk now is to regain his place in the starting lineup after almost two years without official football and to once again become one of the key players for the Ukraine national team.
