The first phase of a massive investigation that has shaken Thailand and the international community has concluded. Police have arrested four suspects in connection with the brutal murders of two Russian citizens and three local residents. The tragedy, which occurred in a popular tourist region, has exposed serious issues regarding safety and the crime situation in the country.
Two Families, One Tragedy
The victims of the criminals were two Russian sisters — 22-year-old Diana Nazimova and her 17-year-old brother Roman. Earlier, the media mistakenly reported that the girls were tourists, but it turned out that the family had moved to Thailand several years ago and lived in the Huai Yai area, southeast of Pattaya.
Just a few kilometers from their place of residence, another horrific act of violence was committed. There, a Thai family was killed: 53-year-old Wichian, his wife Chanthana (50 years old), and their 18-year-old daughter Nichapha.
Timeline of the Crime
Events unfolded rapidly. Early on the morning of July 26, the sisters left home on a rented Honda ADV 150 motorcycle. Shortly afterwards, Diana sent a message to her mother expressing fear that she was being followed. After this, contact with the girls was lost.
Surveillance cameras recorded the sisters talking to an unknown motorcyclist near their home. Authorities launched a search operation, and three days later, a disassembled and buried motorcycle belonging to the victims was found in a forest near an abandoned cemetery.
Criminals' Methods and Motives
Police identified the two main suspects: Thana "Ponga" Koedthong (43 years old) and Tongchai "Tong" Shinila (39 years old). They were arrested on July 31 following a five-day operation on the border with Cambodia.
During interrogation, the criminals confessed to the murder of the Russian sisters. According to them, they posed as police officers, stopped the vehicle, and forced the victims into the forest at gunpoint. The younger brother was handcuffed. According to the investigation, the motive was a simple robbery: the criminals took personal belongings and the motorcycle.
One of the detainees, Tong, also confessed to involvement in the disappearance of the Thai family, which occurred about two months ago. At his direction, police found three more bodies at the crime scene.
Suspects' Past
The investigation revealed alarming facts about the biography of one of the main perpetrators. Thai correctional institutions confirmed that Pong was released from prison as recently as June 5 of this year. He served a sentence of 7 years and 7 months for intentional murder, as well as for violating laws on weapons and drugs.
Government Reaction and Diplomacy
The scale of the tragedy forced the Prime Minister of Thailand, Anutin Charnvirakul, to personally apologize to Russia. The head of government admitted that the incident damaged the country's image, undermined public trust, and would negatively affect the tourism industry. He promised to take urgent measures to prevent similar cases from recurring.
The Russian Embassy in Thailand stated that it is closely monitoring the progress of the investigation. Diplomats emphasized that Moscow has no complaints against the Thai authorities, but noted that the effective work of law enforcement agencies will be crucial for restoring trust.
Current Status of the Case
At present, Pong and Tong have been charged with intentional murder, robbery, illegal possession of weapons, and impersonating law enforcement officers. In connection with the murder of the Thai family, two other suspects have been arrested, whose identities are not yet disclosed. Forensic examination of the victims' bodies is ongoing.
