In the Czech Republic, the amount necessary to live without constant financial strain has been identified. According to calculations by experts published on the Czechia-online portal, the minimum decent salary in 2025 is 48,336 CZK gross (approximately €1,991). This figure reflects the real needs of an adult with one child in the context of the modern economy.

It is important to understand: this is not about the state minimum, but about a calculation that allows covering basic expenses and maintaining a minimal safety buffer. This sum includes not only food and rent, but also transport, clothing, healthcare, education, communication, leisure, as well as small savings and the impact of inflation.

The Gap Between Reality and Official Statistics

Comparison with official figures reveals a serious imbalance. In 2025, the state minimum wage in the Czech Republic was 20,800 CZK (about €857), which is only 43% of the amount needed for a decent life. Even with the increase to 22,400 CZK in 2026, the official "minimum" remains more than twice as low as the expert threshold.

The situation is exacerbated by the fact that the problem is widespread. According to experts, 63% of working citizens in the Czech Republic earn a salary below the level necessary for a normal life. This means that budget difficulties are experienced not only by representatives of low-paying professions but also by a significant part of the middle class.

Average Salary and Median Income

The official average salary of 49,215 CZK (about €2,027) formally exceeds the threshold of a decent minimum for most regions of the country. However, this figure is misleading. A more accurate picture of typical income is given by the median — 45,523 CZK (approximately €1,875). It is this figure that shows that half of all workers earn less than the amount necessary for a comfortable existence.

Furthermore, even the average salary does not ensure stability in major cities. For Prague and Brno, the sum of 49,215 CZK is already below the necessary level.

Housing as the Main Factor of Expenses

The key factor determining the difference in income is the cost of housing. In Prague and Brno, expenses for rent, energy, and utilities are estimated by experts at 21,392 CZK per month (about €881). It is precisely the difference in the cost of real estate and services that explains the gap between 48,336 CZK (for regions) and 56,920 CZK (for capitals).

A person with the same salary can live relatively stably in a small town but is forced to constantly save in Prague or Brno. At the same time, experts emphasize the importance of savings: a reserve for repairs, treatment, or a period of unemployment is an integral part of the calculation of a decent salary, not a luxury.
