With the arrival of each new season, bathroom shelves traditionally get stocked with new bottles of shampoos and masks. Marketing convinces us that hair needs different products for spring, summer, autumn, and winter. However, experts insist: the main guide for care is not the time of year, but the real needs of the curls.

Exclusively for the WAVE project (RBC-Ukraine lifestyle portal), international-level hairdresser and stylist Ruslana Bela debunked the popular myth that hair loss is directly dependent on the changing of seasons.

Why "seasonal" hair loss is an illusion

The specialist explained that if the life cycle of hair were truly dictated by the calendar, people living in equatorial countries without distinct seasonal changes, or constant travelers changing climate zones, would have a completely different picture of hair health. In practice, this does not happen.

The hair growth cycle is genetically programmed and not tied to dates on the calendar. Each hair strand goes through three natural phases: active growth, a transitional period, and shedding. This process largely depends on the body's internal mechanisms, primarily the hormonal background.

When to sound the alarm

Ruslana Bela emphasizes: hair cannot be viewed in isolation from overall health. If increased hair loss is observed, this is not a reason to blame it all on "autumn blues" or "spring vitamin deficiency." It is a symptom requiring the search for the true cause.

In the event of alarming signals, the stylist advises against changing shampoos, but rather to consult a doctor. It is necessary to undergo an examination to identify the root cause of the problem, rather than simply masking it with cosmetic products.

What actually damages hair

It is important to understand the difference between hair loss and the deterioration of hair quality. The expert clarified that improperly selected home care or incorrect coloring does not trigger the shedding mechanism. They can make hair dry, brittle, and dull, but do not affect its growth cycle.

The main goal of care is not to buy new bottles marked "for spring" or "for autumn." The most important thing is that hair looks good every day, regardless of the season outside the window.
