A scandal is brewing in the world of basketball that could overturn the financial and personnel structure of one of the planet's leading leagues. The investigation by the National Basketball Association (NBA) into the Los Angeles Clippers and superstar Kawhi Leonard could drag on until 2027. The situation is exacerbated by the fact that the parties are prepared to go to arbitration if they cannot agree on the results of the audit and the penalties.
Investigation Details: $28 Million and "Bankruptcy"
The audit, conducted by the elite law firm Wachtell Lipton, has already been ongoing for nearly 10 months. The main focus of the investigation is Leonard's sponsorship agreement with the company Aspiration. The contract amount was $28 million. The NBA suspects that the Clippers used this deal to make unofficial payments to the player, thereby circumventing the salary cap.
The specific nature of the case is that Aspiration is in the process of bankruptcy. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver admitted that this makes the investigation extremely difficult. Lawyers face the necessity of involving bankruptcy courts and questioning reluctant witnesses, which significantly slows down the process of gathering evidence.
Threat of Sanctions and Countermeasures
If the NBA imposes sanctions without irrefutable evidence, the Players' Association (NBPA) and the Clippers' management are ready to appeal the decision in neutral arbitration. It is precisely this prospect that drags the process out for years. However, in the event that guilt is confirmed, the consequences for the California club will be catastrophic:
- A fine of up to $7.5 million;
- Loss of draft picks;
- Voiding of Kawhi Leonard's contract;
- Suspension of club officials for up to one year.
Frozen Trade to Toronto
The situation with the investigation has already led to a paralysis of the trade market. As early as June 30, the Clippers and the Toronto Raptors agreed to a blockbuster trade: Leonard was supposed to return to his former club, while Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, and a package of draft picks moved to Los Angeles.
However, on July 9, the deal was suspended. The NBA officially warned the Canadian club: in the event the trade is completed, the Raptors would assume all risks. This means Toronto could receive a player with a voided contract or a suspended athlete. Despite these risks, both franchises state that they intend to close the deal as soon as the situation clears up.
