Just a few days after the signing of a temporary ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran, the situation in the Strait of Hormuz has escalated again. An unidentified projectile struck the upper part of a tanker passing through the strait near the bridge. The incident occurred on a route that was considered relatively safe following agreements between Washington and Tehran.
Damage to the Vessel and Reaction of International Bodies
According to the British Maritime Trade Operations Service, the vessel sustained damage, but preliminary reports indicate that no crew members were injured. Immediately following the attack, the Joint Maritime Information Centre (JMIC) raised the threat level for shipping in the Strait of Hormuz area to "significant".
This incident is another blow to confidence in the new navigation rules. Previously, Western naval forces recommended that ships use the southern route along the coast of Oman, considering this corridor the safest. Iran, meanwhile, has repeatedly warned shipping companies about the need to comply with certain transit routes. In the night of June 27, US Central Command reported strikes on Iranian missile and drone storage facilities, as well as coastal radar stations. In response, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed attacks on US assets in the Middle East, calling it a reaction to Washington's actions.
