Before the NATO summit in Ankara, Ukraine's partners presented a new defense spending mechanism aimed at strengthening military support for Kyiv. This was reported by RBK-Ukraine, citing a statement from the Finnish Ministry of Defense.
Four countries launch financial mechanism
On July 6, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Finland, and Poland published a joint statement on the development of a new defense financing mechanism. The goal is to launch it by 2027, when the agreement will be ratified by NATO countries.
"We are working with key partners to expand the circle of participants in the financial mechanism. Based on technical development, we will move to the next stage of planning and develop the financing mechanism with signatory partners during the autumn," the statement reads.
Reason for creation — war and future threats
The initiators emphasized that the mechanism was created due to the war started by Russia against Ukraine and to counter future threats. "We remain committed to supporting Ukraine, which is defending its sovereignty and repelling Russian aggression," the authors of the initiative stated.
Meeting between Trump and Zelenskyy in Ankara
US President Donald Trump plans to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on July 8 during the NATO summit in Ankara. This was confirmed by White House spokesperson Anna Kelly in a conversation with journalists.
Risk of massive strike before the summit
Russia may launch a massive attack on Ukrainian territory before the NATO summit in Ankara. According to Zelenskyy, this corresponds to the Kremlin's treacherous tactics.
Disagreements within NATO
NATO countries have not yet agreed on a joint statement for the upcoming summit in Ankara. The reason is disagreements over the timing of military aid to Ukraine and the financing of fuel pipelines in Eastern Europe.
