Ukraine's political landscape is undergoing another round of changes. The Verkhovna Rada has officially endorsed the appointment of a renewed Cabinet of Ministers led by Serhiy Koretsky. However, the process of forming the government is not yet complete: two strategically important positions remain vacant pending a separate vote.
Key Positions: Who Will Lead the Military and Diplomacy?
According to procedure, the positions of Minister of Defense and Minister of Foreign Affairs require separate parliamentary approval, with candidates for these posts nominated personally by the President. In the current government configuration, the situation is as follows:
- Minister of Foreign Affairs: According to plans, this post will be retained by Andriy Sybiga.
- Minister of Defense: The candidate for this position is named as Ihor Klymenko, who previously held the post of Head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in Yulia Sviridenko's government.
Change of Power: From Resignation to New Prime Minister
The process of updating the Cabinet was initiated by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as early as Sunday. At that time, the head of state announced that the current Prime Minister, Yulia Sviridenko, would receive a new appointment. By Tuesday, the Verkhovna Rada had sent Yulia Sviridenko and her entire government into resignation.
The candidacy of the new Prime Minister, Serhiy Koretsky, became known almost instantly. First, the information was confirmed by RBC-Ukraine sources, and the day before, the President himself officially approved this appointment.
Intrigue Surrounding the Ministry of Defense and Public Reaction
The main uncertainty until the evening of the previous day remained the question of Mykhailo Fedorov's fate. Until the last moment, it was discussed whether he would retain the post of Minister of Defense. However, during a meeting with MPs of the "Servant of the People" faction, the President stated that he would not nominate Fedorov for re-approval.
According to RBC-Ukraine, one of the reasons for this decision was a conflict between Fedorov and the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Oleksandr Syrsky.
The decision on Fedorov's resignation provoked an immediate reaction in society. This morning in Kyiv, near the I. Franko Theatre, a protest rally began. Activists are demanding that Volodymyr Zelenskyy reconsider the decision and leave Fedorov in the post of Minister of Defense.
