Hollywood actor Nicolas Cage has publicly admitted that he is currently forced to live in hotels after his Malibu coastal estate was threatened by a massive sinkhole. He made the statement on October 31, 2026, at Comic Con in Los Angeles, where journalists asked him about his Halloween plans during a fan interaction. "I'm a bit of a nomad right now. Something happened to my house in Malibu, so I'm just living in hotels, and tonight I won't have the regular trick-or-treaters coming by," the actor said, citing a report by People magazine.
Halloween under new conditions
Cage noted that he would have preferred to spend the holiday in a familiar home environment, but this time he had to adjust his plans. Instead of traditional trick-or-treating at his own home, the actor intends to take his four-year-old daughter, August, to Santa Monica, where a citywide Halloween celebration is taking place. After his daughter falls asleep, Cage plans to watch Stanley Kubrick's horror film The Shining. The actor joked that he considers the film "brilliantly made," despite the fact that Kubrick was nominated for a Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Director for the movie.
How the chasm formed
Trouble with Cage's property began on September 8, 2026. On the Malibu coast, near his estate, a massive sinkhole opened up in place of the driveway, partially swallowing the path to the house. According to data provided by Wave RBC.UA citing People, the collapse occurred amid heavy rains, high tides, and coastal erosion. According to preliminary data obtained by Page Six, the collapse is also linked to the work of a gas company whose employees were repairing a gas pipeline at the site during that period.
Scale of destruction and authorities' reaction
The dimensions of the sinkhole vary according to different sources: Wave RBC.UA reports a depth of about 7.6 meters and a width of around 18 meters, while Page Six estimates the sinkhole at approximately 9 by 9 meters. Due to the destruction of the road, traveling through the area has become dangerous. According to Wave RBC.UA, local authorities declared 31 homes on the street hazardous and evacuated some residents. Meanwhile, Page Six reports that despite significant damage, no organized evacuation took place and no one was injured.
Estate status and emergency work
The estate in question was purchased by Cage in 2024 for $10.5 million. Currently, reports indicate that the actor is attempting to save the property: he has already obtained permits to carry out emergency work on the site. Details on the timeline and scope of restoration measures had not been disclosed at the time of publication.
