On the night of October 22, Russia launched a series of strikes on Kyiv in several waves. According to city services, 15 people were injured in the attack, including two 15-year-old teenagers. Eight of the wounded were hospitalized in city hospitals, while the rest received medical assistance on the spot.
Chronology of strikes
The attack unfolded in several stages. On the evening of October 21, explosions rang out in the capital as a result of a ballistic missile strike, after which, according to reports, the occupiers launched missiles at the city several more times. Thus, Kyiv residents and air defense forces worked in a continuous counteraction mode throughout the night.
Consequences for the city
Due to the aftermath of the attack, traffic on the South Bridge in the direction from the right bank to the left bank was restricted. Drivers are asked to take this restriction into account when planning routes. Rescue services continue their work at the impact sites.
Air defense problem: Shortage of Patriots
Protection against ballistic missiles remains one of the most difficult tasks for the Ukrainian air defense system. According to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the US currently supplies only 12 Patriot missiles per month, which, in his assessment, is not enough to reliably cover large cities from this type of threat.
Context: A series of attacks on the capital
The night strike on October 22 was a continuation of a series of massive attacks on Kyiv. On the night of October 19, the previous massive attack claimed the life of one person, and missile debris damaged a metro station. Earlier, on October 14, damage to energy facilities was reported, and on the night of September 24, two people were killed and buildings in several districts were damaged by strikes. These episodes highlight a steady trend toward multiple missile strikes on the capital over the past weeks.
