On the night of July 1, the Russian city of Penza was struck by unmanned aerial vehicles. The event began with an alarm: a siren sounded over the city, warning of a missile threat. Residents reported a series of powerful explosions that followed the signal.
According to Russian Telegram channels cited by RBC-Ukraine, fires broke out on the territory of industrial facilities as a result of the attack. Reports of heavy smoke appeared in the area of the State Bearing Plant (GPZ). There is also information about a fire near the Penza Scientific Research Institute of Electromechanical Instruments.
Attack targets and air defense operations
Among the damaged facilities is OAO "Mayak" — a defense enterprise specializing in the production of radio electronic equipment, control instruments, communication systems, and military products. Local authorities in the Penza region stated that air defense (PVO) systems fired at the drones.
The region's governor confirmed the consequences of the attack: debris from downed unmanned vehicles damaged power lines, leading to power outages in some areas of the region.
Situation in other regions
The attack on Penza was not an isolated incident. On the same night, drone strikes were recorded in occupied Crimea and Donetsk. In Donetsk, preliminary reports indicated strikes on a logistics vehicle parking lot. In Crimea, in the morning, the NASA FIRMS service recorded a fire north of Feodosia on the E-97 highway section, as well as fires at the "Zapadno-Krymskaya" substation and a mobile gas turbine power plant.
In addition, Ukrainian military forces struck an automobile bridge in the Azov area (Zaporizhzhia region) and a railway bridge in the Ichny settlement area in temporarily occupied Crimea last night. These objects are used by Russia to transport soldiers, weapons, ammunition, and material and technical resources. The results of the strikes on the bridges are still being verified.
