Danish actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who gained worldwide fame for his role as Jaime Lannister in the television series Game of Thrones, has arrived in Kyiv as a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). He has held this position since 2016, using his platform to draw the international community's attention to humanitarian issues, climate change, and gender equality. According to the actor himself, his trip to Ukraine was his personal initiative rather than an official organizational assignment.
Inspecting the Aftermath of the Comfort Town Shelling
One of the key points of his visit was an inspection of the Comfort Town residential complex, which was damaged in a nighttime Russian shelling attack that resulted in one fatality. At the strike site, Coster-Waldau spoke with Novyny.Live journalist Anastasiia Zhydenko and personally examined the scale of the impact. «As always during war, civilians are the victims,» the actor stated while commenting on the destruction. He emphasized that ordinary people who have nothing to do with military operations suffer the most from these strikes.
Spending the Night in the Metro Under Attacks
According to Reuters, during his stay in Kyiv, Coster-Waldau spent the night in a shelter at the Zoloti Vorota metro station. On a night when the capital was under threat of Russian missile and drone strikes, the actor descended underground alongside Kyiv residents. While in the shelter, he urged the international community not to weaken its attention and support for Ukraine: «This is all to raise awareness and make sure that people don't forget about a country that is holding on, but needs the help of the international community. Especially now, as winter approaches.» Footage of the actor in the metro was distributed by India Global Review.
Meetings and Cultural Programme
In addition to inspecting the destroyed residential complex, the Danish actor met with Ukrainian military personnel undergoing treatment and attended a performance of the veteran play One-Day Hero by Volodymyr Tuka. The visit also caught the attention of locals: journalist Ehor Shumikhin posted on Facebook with ironic flair, «Jaime Lannister came to look at the consequences of the enemy shelling of my residential complex. What about yours?» A user on the Threads social network, who posted a selfie with the actor in Kyiv's Podil district, captioned the photo: «Ordinary Kyiv weekdays with Nikolaj Coster-Waldau».
Context of the Visit
Coster-Waldau's stay in Ukraine coincided with a period of active Russian attacks on the capital's infrastructure. The Comfort Town residential complex was struck again during shelling on the night of October 30, when a blast wave blew out windows in several apartment buildings. The actor, whose UNDP mission includes advocating for humanitarian issues, used his time in Kyiv to personally highlight the scale of destruction and remind the world of the need for international support for Ukraine ahead of winter.
