Stian Grimseth, President of the Norwegian Weightlifting Federation, has publicly stated that the national team will not travel to the 2030 World Championships, which the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) awarded to Moscow. The official emphasized that if he retains his leadership post by the time the global championship takes place, he will be categorically against sending Norwegian athletes to Russia. 'If I am still president, I will make it very clear that we will not send athletes to the championship in Russia,' Grimseth stated, adding that he counts on the support of the federation board.
'Simply Unthinkable': The Norwegian Official's Arguments
Grimseth left no room for diplomatic phrasing, calling the IWF's decision 'simply unthinkable.' According to him, a country at war acting as an aggressor 'can in no way be the host of the championship.' At the same time, the official attempted to separate the sports and political domains: 'Of course, to a certain extent, I understand that athletes should be protected as much as possible so they can do sports rather than politics. But for the International Weightlifting Federation to commission Russia to host the World Championships is simply unthinkable.' Grimseth also warned that if the federation's leadership does not submit to his position, he is ready to resign.
Internal Dynamics of the Norwegian Federation
Grimseth's statement came against the backdrop of a complex internal situation within the organization. His two-year term as federation president will end in 2027, when regular elections are due according to the statutes. Already in 2026, an attempt was made to express no confidence in Grimset, but he retained his leadership post following the vote. Thus, by the time of the 2030 World Championships, the outcome of the internal organizational struggle in Norway could determine whether the boycott will be formalized at the federation level or remain merely the personal position of a single official.
Broader Context: Ukraine and the Olympic Significance of the Tournament
Norway is not the first country to announce its intention to boycott the Moscow championship. Earlier, Ukraine voiced a similar position: Minister of Youth and Sports Matvir Bidnyi stated that Ukrainian athletes will not participate in the global championship on the territory of the state that Kyiv calls an aggressor. Crucially, the 2030 World Weightlifting Championships will have qualification significance for the 2032 Olympic Games, making the IWF's decision even more sensitive for national federations: refusing to participate in the tournament could deprive athletes of Olympic licenses.
Russia's Return to Olympic Sports
Awarding Moscow the right to host the 2030 World Championships marked the first time Russia has been granted the right to host an international tournament in an Olympic sport since the beginning of its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. This IWF decision sparked a wave of criticism from a number of European federations and national Olympic committees. For context: earlier, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ordered the International Ice Hockey Federation to reinstate Russian national teams in international competitions, creating a precedent for restoring Russia's presence in Olympic disciplines after 2022.
