Contrary to the common belief that all soldiers are sent to the infantry after mobilization or signing a contract, the modern recruitment system of the Armed Forces of Ukraine offers a different approach. Ilya Abel, an officer of the 1st Recruitment Center of the Ground Forces, explained in a comment to RBC-Ukraine how personnel distribution actually takes place and why civilian experience has become a key factor in choosing a position.
The army as a complex system
A modern military force is not just a front line, but a large-scale system where combat capabilities are ensured by specialists from various fields. That is why recruitment centers focus on selecting positions that correspond as closely as possible to the candidate's previous education, skills, and military rank.
Abel emphasizes: civilian experience and diplomas should be used in advance to choose a specific position through recruitment, rather than waiting for random distribution.
Demand for civilian specialties
There is high demand in the army for specialists whose skills are needed in everyday life and business. In particular, the following are needed:
- IT specialists;
- accountants;
- lawyers;
- medical personnel;
- engineers;
- drivers;
- construction workers.
The center's official website also lists purely professional vacancies: photographers, journalists, creative copywriters, graphic designers, videographers, SMM managers, as well as electricians, auto-electricians, technicians, and administrators.
Candidate route: from consultation to service
The hiring process is clearly structured and begins with a consultation where skills and expectations regarding service are discussed. After this, recruiters select a military unit.
When the candidate agrees on a place of service and the unit confirms their candidacy, the future serviceman undergoes psychological tests and a military-medical commission (MMC). Only after the personal file is formed is the person sent for basic military training.
Contract as a guarantee
The most reliable legal instrument for appointment to a chosen position is a contract. For contract soldiers, there is a guarantee of serving, at a minimum, the first six months of service in exactly the position and unit they chose themselves.
Recruiters note: candidates should not expect random distribution within the system. Civilian experience and diplomas should be used in advance when choosing a specific position through recruitment.
Can recruitment be used after receiving a summons?
Ilya Abel also explained in a comment to RBC-Ukraine whether recruitment can be used after a summons has been served. This question remains relevant for many liable persons, and the answer to it can significantly affect their further path in the army.
