In the city of Kamianske (Dniprodzerzhynsk) in the Dnipropetrovsk region, a large-scale process of updating the public electric transport fleet has begun. The first new tram car has already arrived in the city and will soon begin regular passenger transport on route No. 1. The project, aimed at infrastructure modernization, is funded with the support of «Metinvest», the European Investment Bank, and the city budget.
Scale of modernization and funding sources
According to official data, «Metinvest» has allocated more than 50 million hryvnias for the purchase of 17 new tram cars. The project implementation will take place in several stages: by the end of the current year, the city plans to receive another six cars, and in the next year — another eleven.
The new vehicles will operate on all four city routes. The project is being implemented within the framework of a Memorandum of Cooperation between the «Metinvest Group» and the Kamianske City Council. In 2025, the company already invested 70 million hryvnias in the development of the city's social infrastructure, including the reconstruction of hospitals No. 9 and No. 7, the emergency medical care hospital, and the primary health care center No. 3.
Technical specifications and inclusivity
The first new car became the first update of the rolling stock that Kamianske has received in the last two years. The tram was manufactured by the Ukrainian company «Tatra-Yug». The cars feature a modern design and are equipped with air conditioning systems, video surveillance cameras, and seat belts in the cabin.
Special attention has been paid to the accessibility of transport for people with reduced mobility. The head of operations of the communal enterprise «Transport», Olga Afanasieva, noted the key advantage of the new cars — the presence of a folding ramp at the second door. This solution significantly improves the accessibility of public transport for people with disabilities.
Social significance and support for industry
The Mayor of Kamianske, Andriy Belousov, emphasized that the tram is the main and environmentally friendly mode of transport for an industrial city. Every year, city trams transport about 10 million passengers, 70% of whom are concession holders.
«Taking into account that 20 trams go out to city lines daily, the project will allow us to modernize the rolling stock by almost 85% by 2027», — noted Andriy Belousov.
The implementation of the project is also important for supporting domestic production. Previously, the execution of the order was suspended after a Russian missile strike on the manufacturing enterprise, however, the company «Tatra-Yug» resumed work and returned to fulfilling its obligations.
Investment activity of «Metinvest»
The General Director of «Kametstal», Alexander Tretyakov, noted that Kamianske is the native city for thousands of enterprise employees and their families. According to him, even in the conditions of a full-scale war, the company continues to support communities and invest in their development.
«Metinvest» remains one of the largest investors in the Ukrainian economy. Since February 24, 2022, the company has invested more than 28 billion hryvnias. In the first quarter of 2026, the holding paid 4.3 billion hryvnias in taxes and duties to budgets of all levels.
