Ukraine's number six tennis player and world No. 62 Oleksandra Oleynikova failed to live up to her high seeding status at the WTA 250 tournament in Osaka, Japan. In the Round of 32 match, the Ukrainian lost to American Mary Stoiana, ranked 114th in the WTA, with a score of 2:6, 3:6. The match, which lasted one hour and 21 minutes, ended in a convincing victory for the American tennis player, who seized the initiative on the court from the very first minutes.

Match progression: Stoiana's dominance from the opening games

The first set was under Stoiana's complete control: the American immediately took a 3:0 lead and maintained it until the end of the set. Oleynikova lost all four of her service games, allowing her opponent to close out the opening set in just 39 minutes. In the second set, the battle on the court remained unstable on both sides; however, the Ukrainian again failed to win a single service game, allowing Stoiana to break four times in a row. Despite Oleynikova saving 11 break points, the American capitalized better on her opponent's mistakes and brought the match to victory. For both tennis players, this was their first head-to-head meeting at the professional level.

Troublesome form: three defeats in four matches

The defeat in Osaka became Oleynikova's third in her last four matches against opponents ranked outside the top 100 in the world rankings. The Ukrainian's only win since the end of September came against Chinese tennis player Wushuang Zheng. Such a series of results against the backdrop of her high world ranking (62nd place) raises questions about the athlete's current form and her ability to consistently fulfill her potential in matches against lower-ranked opponents.

Moving to Tokyo: an attempt at WTA 500 transition

The unsuccessful start in Osaka interrupted Oleynikova's campaign at the WTA 250 level, where she had been playing for the first time since late July. The next stage in her tournament calendar will be Tokyo, where the Ukrainian will compete in the qualifying draw of the prestigious WTA 500 tournament. For Ukraine's sixth-ranked player, participating in the qualifications rather than the main draw could be an additional challenge, given her recent inconsistency in results.

Earlier, the XAB.info editorial board reported on the updated WTA rankings of Elina Svitolina, Marta Kostyuk, and other Ukrainian tennis players. Oleynikova's results in Osaka and her subsequent performance in Tokyo will be taken into account when compiling the next edition of the rankings.
