On October 26, the 2026/27 Ukrainian Fencing Cup officially started in Uzhhorod, bringing together the country's top athletes at a single venue. The first day of the tournament determined the winners of the individual saber events, with the main drama unfolding in the women's bracket. Olympic champion Alina Komashchuk demonstrated a strong will, turning the tide of the decisive bout and claiming the prestigious trophy.
A Thrilling Final and a Dramatic Turnaround in the Gold Medal Bout
The decisive clash of the women's tournament featured two titled athletes from Odesa — Paris 2024 Olympic team champion Alina Komashchuk and her compatriot Olha Kravatska (Elena Kravatska). The first half of the final match was difficult for the future winner, who trailed her opponent 7:8. However, in the second half, Komashchuk changed her tactics, executed a series of successful attacks, and brought the match to a 15:9 victory. This triumph earned the saber fencer her third Ukrainian Fencing Cup gold and second career title.
Success for Mykolaiv Athletes and High Turnout
The bronze medals in the women's individual event went to Mykolaiv representatives Oleksandra Bondar and Viktoriia Korotchenko, who lost in the semifinals to Kravatska (8:15) and Komashchuk (7:15) respectively. In the men's individual saber tournament, Mykolaiv athlete Yuriy Tsap emerged victorious, claiming the Ukrainian Cup for the second time in his career. The competition brought together participants from Kyiv, Mykolaiv, Odesa, Cherkasy, Netishyn, and Rivne, with the women's tournament featuring 43 saber fencers and a total of over 80 athletes in individual disciplines.
New Location and the Significance of the National Tournament
The newly launched tournament opened the series of all-Ukrainian senior competitions for the new sports season. After a two-year period in the capital, the organizers decided to relocate the Ukrainian Cup to Uzhhorod. The comprehensive format of the competitions remains unchanged: athletes will compete for twelve sets of awards across three weapons, making this stage a key test of strength ahead of international competitions.
