At the end of June, the Kyiv "Chaika" racetrack turned into an arena of fierce competition where the fate of a ticket to the finals was decided. On June 27 and 28, the second stage of the Open Drift UA competition took place here, gathering 60 of the best pilots from all over Ukraine. The event went beyond a simple sporting spectacle, uniting motorsport professionals and representatives of the security forces.
From Qualification to Playoffs
The competition started with intense training and qualifying races. The judges' task was to select the strongest from the 60 participants. By the end of the first day, 32 racers advanced to the fight for the main prize. It was they who met in knockout pairings, where every slip or error in trajectory could cost them further participation in the tournament.
The specifics of the drifting discipline require pilots to have a flawless technique of synchronized drifting. The fate of a ticket to the next round was decided in fractions of a second, as cars slid across the asphalt, leaving a trail of smoke and rubber behind them.
Military on the Track: BMW vs. BMW
Particular interest among spectators and fans was aroused by the participation of army representatives. Pilots from the 78th Separate Air Assault Brigade and the 7th Rapid Reaction Corps of the Air Assault Troops took to the track. The military did not just support the event; they fielded two bright BMW E46 race cars, which became some of the most noticeable participants in the races.
The rivalry between civilian pilots and military personnel added an extra degree of tension to the races. Against the backdrop of smoke screens and roaring engines, spectators watched how machines, usually intended for service, demonstrated the highest level of driving skill on the racetrack.
Atmosphere of Thrills
The visual accompaniment of the Open Drift UA stage became a spectacle in itself. Bright moments of the races, clouds of smoke from tires, and dynamic maneuvers created a unique atmosphere of thrill. This event became a continuation of the sports theme of the week, immediately after the world discussed the results of the "Hellish Race" of Formula 1 in Austria.
