United States federal prosecutors have formally charged 35-year-old OpenAI engineer Abdulrahman Alfozan with industrial espionage and illegal collection of confidential information. The incident has caused widespread resonance in the Silicon Valley technology sector, as it concerns the security of one of the world's leading artificial intelligence organizations. According to the investigation, the accused, who had been working at the company since July 2025, attempted to set up a covert recording of strategically important leadership negotiations inside the corporation's main office in San Francisco.
The Incident and OpenAI's Investigation
According to case materials, Alfozan left a homemade recording device in the OpenAI executive director's meeting room, to which access was strictly restricted for him. The device was discovered by the company's security service on September 30. It turned out to be skillfully masked and connected to the USB port of a television set. OpenAI management promptly deployed its own advanced artificial intelligence models to analyze the evidence and identify the circumstances of the preparation for the crime. Thanks to the coordinated actions of internal security and the FBI, the suspect was quickly identified and detained after he left another bag containing his personal wallet and a second recorder in the office on October 5.
Digital Footprints and Evidence in a Family Chat
During a detailed digital investigation, law enforcement agencies revealed interesting details of the crime's preparation. Investigators examined a chatbot account associated with the suspect's wife, where characteristic search queries were discovered. The perpetrator was actively interested in methods of creating continuous audio recorders, as well as ways to securely encrypt SD cards to conceal evidence. This fact became key proof of the intentional nature of the engineer's actions, who carefully planned the operation to extract trade secrets from the technology giant.
Official Company Position and Potential Consequences
OpenAI management immediately cooperated with federal prosecutors and the FBI after discovering the spy equipment, and the employee was promptly fired. The company's official statement emphasizes that at present, the investigation has found no indication that the accused managed to gain unauthorized access to model weights, source code, or customer data. Nevertheless, the incident has been classified as a national security threat. During a court appearance on Tuesday, Abdulrahman Alfozan was charged and faces up to five years in federal prison, a heavy federal fine of $250,000, and a three-year period of supervised release.
