OpenAI has announced ChatGPT Work — a new tool that elevates ChatGPT from the role of a text-based chatbot to that of an autonomous working AI agent. The service is capable of independently carrying out multi-step work tasks, gaining direct access to the tools that employees use on a daily basis. This is reported by RBC-Ukraine, citing TechCrunch analytics, while the context and details are confirmed by Ukrainian and Russian tech publications.

From Codex to a Universal Office Agent

According to the developers, the ChatGPT Work application is built on the basis of the Codex tool, but it has been adapted for specialists across a wide range of industries — accountants, analysts, marketers, and managers. The key difference of the new product is that it does not simply answer questions in a dialogue format, but autonomously performs complex assignments. To do this, the user needs to grant the model access to work services: email, the corporate messenger Slack, Notion or Figma databases, and even calendars. The company's goal, according to the developers, is to move beyond the concept of a text chat toward creating a "digital personal assistant" that will take over all office routine and process large volumes of information that a person simply "doesn't get around to."

Key Use Cases

OpenAI representatives and early testers highlight several typical tasks. First, automatic analytics collection: the AI agent can independently read a discussion of a problem in a work chat and, based on that data, build charts and diagrams. Second, creating reports and memoranda: investors and operational teams use the product to automatically gather company data from various sources into unified analytics dashboards. Third, interaction with calendars and email: the tool finds unstructured information in incoming messages (for example, event schedules) and independently adds entries to Google Calendar. Finally, research monitoring can be configured — an automatic weekly digest of scientific publications on a given topic.

Security and Privacy

Granting a chatbot full access to personal correspondence and corporate documents inevitably raises concerns about data security and privacy. Andrew Ambrosino, OpenAI's lead engineer for the desktop application, acknowledges that the risk of accidental leakage of confidential information exists, but the company is working to make task execution "as safe and predictable as possible." Thus, OpenAI itself does not deny the existence of the risk, but declares its reduction in the course of product refinement.

Technical Barriers and Prospects

Beyond privacy issues, there are also technical limitations. The complexity of configuring access rights: granting read or edit permissions for files in cloud storage requires additional actions from the user and parallel work in the web version and mobile app. Assessing the quality of work is also difficult: unlike software code, which either works or doesn't, evaluating the quality of an AI-generated business strategy or presentation is significantly harder. Nevertheless, OpenAI is convinced that the world is ready to move to full-fledged interaction with AI agents, and that further refinement of language models will make such tools a standard part of the daily work of any office employee.
