An incident requiring immediate surgical intervention occurred in the Odesa region. A 40-year-old man was urgently delivered to a local medical facility with a diagnosis of "foreign body in the rectum." Preliminary data indicates that the dimensions of the stuck object were significant, requiring the work of the on-call surgical team.
According to information received from sources in medical circles, the patient explained that the injury occurred accidentally at home. At present, the victim's condition is assessed as stable; he is under observation and is receiving the necessary complex of therapeutic assistance.
Clinical risks and emergency care
Cases of foreign objects entering the distal part of the large intestine are classified in surgery as combined-type colorectal injuries. Protocols of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine prescribe emergency hospitalization in such conditions, as delaying seeking help carries critical risks.
In clinical practice, several main threats associated with the presence of a foreign body in the gastrointestinal tract are distinguished:
- Perforation of the intestinal walls: Mechanical damage or rupture of the mucous and muscular membranes, which can lead to the leakage of intestinal contents into the abdominal cavity.
- Acute peritonitis: Diffuse inflammation of the peritoneum developing within a few hours after the integrity of the intestinal tube is compromised. This condition requires immediate laparotomy.
- Necrosis and tissue ischemia: Compression of large blood vessels and capillaries of the intestinal wall by a bulky object, leading to the death of tissue areas due to impaired blood supply.
Legal aspects and medical confidentiality
Medical intervention in such situations is strictly regulated by the Law of Ukraine "Fundamentals of Legislation of Ukraine on Healthcare." The staff of the medical institution is obliged to act within the framework of professional standards, ensuring the relief of pain syndrome and the safe extraction of the object. Depending on the complexity of the case, the procedure may be performed manually, endoscopically, or via open surgery under general anesthesia.
An important aspect remains the observance of confidentiality. Information about the diagnosis, the circumstances of the injury, and the patient's personal data constitutes a medical secret in accordance with Article 40 of the aforementioned Law. Disclosure of this information by medical personnel without the patient's consent or legal grounds (for example, a request from law enforcement agencies in the presence of signs of a criminal offense) entails disciplinary, civil, or criminal liability.
In accordance with Article 286 of the Civil Code of Ukraine, every citizen has the right to confidentiality regarding their state of health and the fact of seeking medical assistance. This excludes the legitimacy of the public dissemination of personal medical records. Official comments from the administration of the district hospital or the relevant health department have not yet been received.
