On the morning of October 23, 2026, more than 900 settlements in the Zhytomyr region were left without electricity following massive nighttime shelling by the Russian Federation. Civil and critical infrastructure of the region, as well as residential buildings, came under attack once again.
Large-Scale Nighttime Attacks on the Energy System
According to Vitaliy Bunechko, head of the Zhytomyr Regional Military Administration, Russian forces purposefully targeted energy facilities and residential structures across the region throughout the night. As a result of the shelling, destruction and damage were recorded at six private households. No information regarding casualties or injuries among the civilian population was reported as of morning.
Additionally, on the night of October 23, one of DTEK's thermal power plants underwent a massive attack. Due to a direct hit, the plant's equipment suffered significant damage, forcing the enterprise to completely halt electricity generation.
Critical Infrastructure Operation and Damage Recovery
Due to the large-scale power outage, critical facilities in the region were promptly switched to backup power sources. Special Invincibility Centers have been deployed across the region where residents can warm up, charge their gadgets, and receive necessary assistance. Power engineering crews are working around the clock, though repair operations are severely complicated by the constant threat of renewed air strikes.
Significance of Events and Future Prospects
The current wave of strikes on energy facilities in the Zhytomyr region demonstrates the continuation of Russian tactics aimed at destroying the life support systems of Ukrainian regions. Restoring stable power supplies for more than nine hundred settlements will require time and security for repair teams. The situation remains under strict control by regional authorities and emergency services.
