In the era of booming e-commerce, receiving a package has become routine. However, the process does not always go smoothly: shipments can be delayed, lost, or arrive with damaged packaging. In such situations, many consumers do not know how to act. The State Consumer Protection Service of Ukraine has reminded citizens of their legal rights and the algorithms of action in case of delivery problems.

Informedness — the first step to protection

According to the explanations of the department, every client has an unconditional right to receive full information about postal services. The communication operator is obliged to provide this information upon first request. Knowing the company's terms of operation allows the consumer to assess risks in advance and choose the optimal delivery method.

A key point is the preservation of documentation. After sending a package, it is recommended to keep all receipts, bills, and waybills. It is precisely these documents that become the main evidence when filing an official claim in case of disputes.

What to do when receiving damaged cargo

Often problems are identified at the moment of receiving the shipment. If, upon inspection, it is visible that the packaging has signs of damage, experts advise not to rush to take the package. In this case, it is necessary to record the condition of the cargo. This can be done using photos or video. Such materials will become irrefutable evidence of the fact of damage, which will significantly simplify the process of obtaining compensation.

How to protect valuable items and documents

To send expensive items or important documents, the State Consumer Protection Service strongly recommends using the "declared value" service. In case of loss or damage of such a shipment, the client has more legal opportunities to recover damages in full.

In addition, for especially valuable items, a detailed description of the contents should be drawn up. This document confirms exactly what was inside the packaging, excluding the possibility of disputes about the contents.

Operator obligations and new services

The department emphasizes: the postal communication operator is obliged to consider the client's appeal and provide a response in the manner established by law. Postal companies are responsible for the safety of shipments and the quality of services provided.

Along with reminding consumers of their rights, changes are taking place in the logistics sector. Thus, "Nova Poshta" has launched a pilot project for night delivery of packages to postamats in Kyiv, Lviv, Odesa, Dnipro, and Poltava. The service operates from 22:00 to 07:00, and after testing, it is planned to expand it to all million-plus cities.

"Ukrposhta" is also expanding its capabilities. The company is actively implementing a network of postamats for quick package pickup. New lockers have already started working in the Odesa region, Vinnytsia, Khmelnytskyi, and Mykolaiv. In the near future, the installation of terminals will also begin in Lviv and Ivano-Frankivsk.
