Many Ukrainians believe that only one supplement can be added to a pension. However, the legislation provides for the possibility of simultaneously crediting several types of supplements. It is important to understand which payments are cumulative and which replace each other so as not to miss the funds due.
Age-related compensation and its features
One of the common types of support is a monthly compensatory supplement, which is assigned after the pensioner reaches a certain age. As of 2026, specific amounts for these payments are in effect. However, there is an important nuance: these amounts are not cumulative.
For example, if a citizen already receives a supplement of 300 hryvnias and then reaches an age that entitles them to a higher payment amount, they receive only the difference. The system works on the principle of replacing the old amount with a new one, rather than layering them.
Supplement for long insurance service
The duration of employment has a significant impact on the pension amount. If a person has insurance service exceeding the norm established by law, an additional payment is credited to them.
For most pensioners, service exceeding 35 years for men and 30 years for women is considered above the norm. For pensions assigned before October 2011, different norms apply. For each full year of such "overtime" service, the pension increases by 1% of the subsistence minimum for persons who have lost their ability to work. In 2026, the maximum supplement for one year of such service is 25.95 hryvnias.
Special merits and statuses
The legislation provides for special supplements for citizens who have special merits before the state. The amount of such a payment depends on the status and is determined as a percentage of the subsistence minimum.
The right to additional payments is held, in particular, by citizens in need of constant outside care, as well as certain age pensioners if certain conditions are met. Such increases may be paid simultaneously with other supplements unless otherwise provided by law. In some cases, to assign such a payment, it is necessary to independently contact the Pension Fund with supporting documents.
State guarantees and automatic recalculation
In Ukraine, state guarantees for the minimum pension amount are in effect. If, after all calculations, the total amount of payments does not reach the guaranteed level, the Pension Fund automatically sets a supplement to a certain amount. This occurs provided that the requirements for age and insurance service are met.
It is important to note that the supplement for special merits is paid in addition to the guaranteed minimum pension amount. That is, it is not "absorbed" by this guarantee and is an additional sum.
The Pension Fund performs most recalculations automatically. However, if a citizen believes they are entitled to a supplement that was not assigned, they can contact any PFU service center or submit an application through the web portal of electronic services. Specialists will check the pension case and, if there are grounds, conduct a recalculation.
Context of reform
Against the backdrop of current payments, a large-scale pension reform is being prepared in Ukraine. It is based on a three-pillar model, which will include solidarity payments, professional pensions, and a savings system. For now, the specific list of active payments depends on the type of pension, the person's age, their insurance service, and special status.
