Relations between Washington and Berlin in the military sphere have taken an unexpected turn. The Pentagon has officially blocked the sale of long-range Tomahawk cruise missiles to Germany. According to the publication FREEДOM, citing Politico, this decision is a blow to Berlin's plans, which viewed American missiles as a temporary solution on the path to creating its own strike systems.
Strategy of Reducing Presence
The refusal to supply weapons is not an isolated incident. This decision is part of a broader US policy aimed at reducing its military presence in Europe. Previously, Washington had already begun withdrawing part of its troops from German territory and reduced a number of commitments within NATO. The United States handed over a document to its allies containing plans to reduce the American military footprint on the continent, however, the Pentagon has not yet announced specific timelines for the implementation of these plans.
Restrictions and Concerns
Analysts note that the US is not only reducing its role in the European security system but also strictly limiting allies' access to high-precision weaponry. A key factor here is Washington's concern regarding Russia's possible reaction to the strengthening of Europe's strike potential. Thus, the American administration is effectively placing allies in dependence on its geopolitical calculations.
Europe's Response: Course Towards Independence
Against the backdrop of US actions, European countries are forced to reconsider their approaches to regional security. Restrictions on access to American technologies are accelerating the development of their own long-range systems, which will not be under Washington's control. Europe understands that in the context of changing US policy, it needs to achieve military independence.
While Berlin is looking for alternatives, the German defense industry is already responding to the challenges. For example, Diehl Defence is preparing to produce Ukrainian "Flamingo" drones, which indicates a search for new partners and technologies to bypass American restrictions.
