Polish authorities have initiated the procedure for the compulsory expropriation of the building of the former General Consulate of the Russian Federation in Gdansk. The General Prosecutor's Office of Poland has filed a corresponding lawsuit demanding the nationalization of the real estate object, which is the last diplomatic mission of the RF in the country.
Legal dispute over real estate
According to the publication Fakt, cited by RBC-Ukraine, the building at 15 Batorego Street officially closed its doors in December 2025. However, according to Wojciech Murawski, an advisor to the General Prosecutor's Office, Russia has formally not left the premises. It is on this basis that Polish officials are conducting measures to vacate the object and have filed a lawsuit in court.
The situation is exacerbated by financial issues. As early as April of this year, electricity and heating were cut off in the building. The reason was the debts of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to Polish utility services, which amounted to 5.5 million zlotys. In addition, the amount of debt on interest reached another 3 million zlotys.
Historical context and legal positions
The General Consulate building has been functioning since 1951. At present, the parties occupy diametrically opposite positions regarding property rights. The Russian Federation insists that the real estate is its property. At the same time, Polish authorities claim that the object should pass into the state treasury of Poland.
Reasons for closure and geopolitical background
The decision to withdraw consent for the mission's activities was announced by Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski in November 2025. The official reason was the government's response to sabotage activities directed against Polish railway infrastructure.
The Head of the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Radosław Sikorski, previously stated that he does not rule out provocations by the Kremlin against the republic and NATO countries. In his opinion, such actions may be aimed at testing the triggering of Article 5 of the North Atlantic Alliance. Sikorski also warned that Moscow may be preparing a staged provocation "under a false flag" to justify further escalation of the conflict.
