Poland has clarified the condition of two law enforcement officers who were wounded during the arrest of the assailant in Krakow's Main Market Square. According to data provided to Reuters by the spokesperson for the Lesser Poland Voivodeship Police Headquarters and cited by RBC-Ukraine, both police officers have undergone surgery and are in stable condition. The voivodeship headquarters announced this shortly after midnight on November 8. Simultaneously, Poland's Minister of Justice appealed to citizens to donate blood for one of the wounded officers.
Condition of the wounded police officers
The police officers wounded during the shooter's arrest underwent surgical procedures, after which their condition was assessed as stable. According to the authorities, these two officers were right in the middle of the shootout with the assailant and acted in the first minutes after the shooting began. As stated by the country's leadership, their names are Jakub Kulik and Artur Moranski. The spokesperson for the voivodeship headquarters confirmed that the surgeries were successful and there is no longer a threat to their lives while they remain in stable condition.
Shooter in critical condition
The 24-year-old assailant was also hospitalized and underwent several surgeries. According to the same data, his condition is described as stable yet highly critical. Footage published from the scene shows the shooter falling after a firefight with the police. Thus, both sides of the incident—the wounded law enforcement officers and the assailant himself—have undergone surgical treatment, though the severity of their conditions differs significantly.
Reaction of Polish authorities
Prime Minister Donald Tusk called police officers Jakub Kulik and Artur Moranski "true heroes," emphasizing that they likely saved many lives by risking their own. Minister of Interior Marcin Kierwinski focused on the rapid response of the security forces: according to him, the police prevented a significantly higher number of casualties because officers opened fire on the assailant just three minutes after the first report of the shooting. These statements became part of the state's official reaction to the tragedy.
Chronology of the tragedy
The incident itself occurred on November 7 at around 15:00, when the assailant drove into Krakow's Main Market Square and opened fire on people. According to available data, six people were killed; the police subsequently disclosed information about the assailant's identity. RBC-Ukraine previously reported on the first details of the attack. The consequences included two police officers being wounded during the shooter's arrest and his hospitalization in critical condition following multiple surgeries.
National mourning
Polish President Karol Nawrocki and Prime Minister Donald Tusk responded to the tragedy. A national mourning period has been declared in the country for November 8 and 9, reflecting the scale of the incident's resonance and the official position of the state regarding the victims and the wounded. Thus, the events in Krakow have escalated into a nationwide response accompanied by both operational and political statements.
