The British publication The Times has published a piece that could upend the balance of power: former Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov is being considered as a potential candidate for the highest state office. According to sources, the creation of a new political structure aimed at fighting corruption and implementing institutional reforms is actively being discussed within the former official's circle.
From digitalization to defense: the path to power
Mykhailo Fedorov, currently 35 years old, has managed to traverse an impressive career path in a short time. From January to July 2026, he headed the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, but his tenure ended with a resignation initiated by the Verkhovna Rada during a major restructuring of the Cabinet of Ministers. Prior to his appointment to the defense post, Fedorov was known as the head of the Ministry of Digital Transformation, where he oversaw the implementation of cutting-edge technologies in public administration.
Now, according to reports from foreign media, the focus of his activities is shifting towards the creation of a new political force. Sources from The Times report that consultations on this matter are already underway with the participation of several People's Deputies. The main goal of the new structure is cited as countering corruption risks in public administration.
Legal reality: why elections are impossible right now
Despite the intriguing rumors, the situation has strict legal boundaries. At this time, all statements regarding Fedorov's presidential ambitions remain within the realm of analysts' assessments. Neither the former minister nor his official representatives have commented on the possibility of creating parties or participating in election campaigns.
The key obstacle remains the current legal regime. According to the Law of Ukraine "On the Legal Regime of Martial Law," the holding of any elections — from presidential to local — during the period of martial law is prohibited. This means that any preparations for a campaign are purely hypothetical and can only be realized after the cancellation of martial law or the introduction of corresponding changes to the legislation.
