The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) was forced to terminate negotiations with world football legend Andrea Pirlo regarding his appointment as head coach of the national team. The deal, which seemed almost finalized, collapsed at the last moment due to political pressure and the coach's sponsorship obligations.
Pirlo was the top candidate
The 47-year-old specialist, currently coaching Dubai United, was considered by the FIGC leadership as the ideal option after negotiations with Pep Guardiola failed. The process was overseen by such authoritative figures as Paolo Maldini and Leonardo. The parties had already reached a compromise: the coach's agent, Tullio Tinti, initiated the procedure to terminate the contract with the Emirati club, and Pirlo's official presentation was scheduled for Tuesday, July 28.
Reason for rejection: ties with a Russian bookmaker
However, in the last few hours, the situation changed radically. The main obstacle was a sponsorship agreement that Pirlo signed last year with the Russian bookmaking agency Fonbet. Under the contract, the footballer acted as a global brand ambassador, participating in events organized in cooperation with the Russian Ministry of Sport.
Italian politicians perceived this connection as unacceptable under current geopolitical conditions. Immediately after news of the possible appointment, appeals flooded the federation demanding the cancellation of the choice.
Pressure from politicians
Leaders of Italian parties took a hard line, calling on federation president Giovanni Malagò not to approve Pirlo's candidacy. Mauro Berutto, head of the sports department of the Democratic Party secretariat, stated that he hopes Pirlo will resolve this "embarrassing issue" himself by resigning if he is indeed elected.
Even more categorical was the leader of the Azione party, Carlo Calenda. He emphasized that anyone who campaigned in support of Russia after the start of the invasion of Ukraine in 2022 has no right to hold a national position.
Crisis in Italian football
The situation with finding a coach against the backdrop of a political scandal is exacerbated by a crisis in the national team. In the spring of this year, the "Azzurri" suffered a shameful defeat in the World Cup 2026 qualifying playoffs, losing on penalties to the Bosnia and Herzegovina national team. This led to the dismissal of Gennaro Gattuso, and since then the team has remained without a coach. The national team's last major success remains the victory at Euro 2020 under the leadership of Roberto Mancini.
Andrea Pirlo's career
Despite the failure in negotiations with the FIGC, Pirlo's professional path remains impressive. He started his coaching career in 2020 with Juventus U-23, then took charge of the main team of the Turin club, winning the Cup and the Italian Super Cup with them. In subsequent years, he coached the Turkish Fatih Karagümrük and Sampdoria before moving to the UAE.
