Pope Leo XIV issued an emotional statement, calling on believers worldwide to pray for the swift end of the war in Ukraine. The occasion for this appeal was news of new casualties and destruction, specifically the strike on the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra.

In his message on the social network X, the Pontiff expressed deep concern about the situation, describing the news as "painful." He noted that the conflict continues to expand, taking the lives of innocent people, including rescuers, and destroying cultural heritage.

Solidarity with the Victims

Leo XIV emphasized his full solidarity with the wounded, those mourning their lost loved ones, and those who, despite the violence, continue to serve life. In his message, the Pope asked the Lord to open paths for dialogue, extinguish hatred, and make the establishment of a just and lasting peace possible.

Details of the Attack on the Shrine

The call for peace came against the backdrop of tragic events on the night of June 15, when Russia launched a massive attack on Kyiv, deploying 60 missiles and attack drones. One of the targets of the aggressors was the Dormition Cathedral of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra.

As a result of a drone hitting the church roof, a fire broke out. Despite the prompt work of rescuers, the fire was extinguished, but the shrine suffered serious damage. The fire damaged the iconostasis, as well as unique wall paintings and frescoes.

Evacuation of Relics and Consequences

Immediately after the shelling, an urgent evacuation of ancient icons, antimins, and other valuable liturgical relics located in the risk zone began. To prevent further destruction and ensure safety, the complex temporarily suspended visitor admissions.

Experts from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) believe that the strike on the Lavra pursued a dual purpose. According to analysts, the Russian leadership sought not only to inflict military damage but also to achieve a powerful psychological effect by attacking one of the main spiritual centers of Ukraine.
