The Russian leadership has once again outlined its ambitions regarding the eastern regions of Ukraine, announcing its intention to establish full control over Donbas within a short timeframe.

Statements at the Valdai Club

During his speech at the plenary session of the Valdai Discussion Club, Vladimir Putin publicly disagreed with the assessments of Ukrainian and European analysts. According to his claims, Russian troops will supposedly accomplish their tasks much earlier than in a year and a half or two years. These statements came against the backdrop of ongoing large-scale hostilities and regular offensive attempts by the Russian army on the eastern front.

Contradictory Data

While the Russian side claims an acceleration in the pace of advancement, independent experts and international institutions, including the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), record a completely different dynamic. According to analytical reports, the military-political leadership of the Russian Federation has systematically disrupted established schedules since the beginning of the full-scale invasion in 2022. The Kremlin has already changed about 15 different deadlines for capturing Donbas, yet none of them have been met on time due to the effective resistance of Ukraine's defense forces.

Cynical Proposals and Manipulations

In addition to statements about timelines, the Russian leader addressed the Ukrainian side with a proposal regarding territorial concessions, questioning the point of resisting in the face of inevitable land losses. Furthermore, the head of the Kremlin voiced a number of traditional propaganda talking points, claiming that Russia allegedly did not start the war and does not strike civilian targets, while also rejecting initiatives for a mutual cessation of strikes on energy and civil infrastructure.
