The Ukrainian vocational education system is preparing for a major transformation. At the heart of the reforms is not only the updating of curricula but also the technical infrastructure of colleges. Deputy Minister of Education and Science Dmytro Zavhorodniy discussed this in an interview with RBC-Ukraine.
Equipment as the Foundation of Learning
Today, the infrastructure of vocational and pre-higher vocational education institutions in Ukraine is being actively updated. The official emphasizes: it is impossible to change the teaching program if there is no equipment for practical training.
“We cannot teach a machinist without a machine or a simulator. The same applies to many other professions,” Zavhorodniy noted. According to him, for the third year in a row, the state has been moving towards a large-scale update of the material and technical base of colleges.
New Standards from 2027
Alongside infrastructure modernization, Ukraine is transitioning to modernizing the content of education. This year, all educational standards in vocational colleges are being updated. Starting with the 2027 intake, students will study under new programs.
Specialty programs are being developed jointly with employers. Representatives of large companies are involved in adapting study plans to the real requirements of the labor market.
Adaptation of General Education Subjects
From 2027, the programs for senior high school within colleges will also be updated as part of the “New Ukrainian School” (NUS) project. Mathematics, physics, biology, and other general education subjects will be adapted to the specific training profile.
“For future medical professionals, they will differ from the programs for auto mechanics or agronomists,” Zavhorodniy explained. This will make education more practical and oriented towards specific professions.
Large-Scale Work on Standards
This year, the development and approval of hundreds of model curricula and standards continues. According to the Ministry of Education and Science representative, this is a significant amount of work, but it is through such stages that the system will systematically implement new requirements for teaching on modern equipment.
Previously, there were reports of a shortage of applicants for certain specialties in Ukrainian colleges. Experts also noted that now is the golden time for the development of vocational education, which is necessary for the entire country.
