The American research institute Gallup has published the results of a large-scale monitoring of socio-economic sentiments in Russia. Data collected during the spring of 2026 records unprecedented dynamics: the level of pessimism regarding personal well-being and the economic situation in regions has reached a historical maximum over the last twenty years of observations.
The study, conducted from March to May 2026, revealed a fundamental shift in citizens' perception of their own lives. The majority of the adult population of the country shifted to negative assessments, which correlates with a sharp decline in trust in key state institutions.
Crisis of Expectations: From Personal Finances to the Regional Market
Gallup statistics demonstrate a consistent shift in consumer sentiment in a depressive direction. If in 2025 a certain inertia of hope was still maintained, by the spring of 2026 the situation changed radically.
Key indicators of quality of life showed an alarming trend:
- Personal standard of living: 56% of respondents reported a deterioration in their living standards. This figure rose by 13 percentage points compared to the same period last year. Only 29% of citizens were able to note improvements.
- Regional economy: A record 60% of respondents noted a deterioration in the economic conjuncture in their cities. For comparison: in 2025, this figure was only 30%. Positive changes were recorded by only 27% of survey participants.
- Labor market: Assessments of job availability returned to pre-crisis negative trends. 58% of Russians consider the current period unfavorable for job hunting, while only 35% assess employment opportunities positively.
Erosion of Trust in Power Institutions
Economic difficulties had a direct impact on sociological indices of power stability. In conditions of a shortage of qualified personnel and rising defense spending, citizens began to evaluate the work of state structures more skeptically.
The most dramatic decline in trust was recorded in the sphere of information and elections:
- Trust in media freedom plummeted by 25 percentage points, amounting to only 34% (down from 59% in 2025).
- The assessment of election integrity dropped by 16 points to the 40% mark.
- The rating of the Government of the Russian Federation fell by 14 points, reaching a minimum since 2021 (53%).
- Even the Armed Forces, traditionally an institution with a high rating, lost 13 points of trust, dropping to 66% — the lowest value since 2013.
National centers for sociological research (FOM, VCIOM) also confirm this trend. According to FOM data for the end of June 2026, the approval rating of the President of the Russian Federation's activities fell to 69%, which is the lowest figure in the last four years.
Economic Context and Forecasts
Experts link the surge in pessimism to imbalances in the country's macroeconomic model. Despite stable raw material prices, the Ministry of Economic Development of the Russian Federation was forced to adjust the GDP growth forecast for 2026 downwards — from 1.3% to 0.4%.
According to methodological rules for assessing sovereign risks, a simultaneous decline in purchasing power and a decrease in trust in basic institutions by more than 10% within a year indicates the degradation of the economy's internal adaptive mechanisms. The spring of 2026 became the point where these processes reached their peak over two decades.
